Statement on Governor’s Wildfire Emergency Declaration

Friday, March 22, 2019

SACRAMENTO – Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel), a member of the Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Management, issued the following statement after Governor Newsom declared a statewide emergency today to speed up fire prevention efforts:

“The Governor deserves credit for acting with urgency to prepare our state for this year’s wildfire season. Given the devastation of recent disasters such as the Camp, Woolsey, and Holy Fires, the state must move quickly to protect vulnerable communities now.

“I hope the Governor’s order will indeed accelerate the implementation of wildfire fuel reduction projects contained in CalFIRE’s Community Wildfire Prevention and Mitigation Report. The report identifies 35 projects that can be implemented immediately to reduce wildfire risks for more than 200 communities. It also notes the need to ‘suspend regulatory requirements as needed to complete the fuels reduction projects in 2019.’

“I stand ready to assist the Governor with any legislative action to eliminate bureaucratic roadblocks that could slow these projects.”
