Senate Bill Focused on Reducing High Treatment Costs for Those Suffering With Diabetes Advances

Wednesday, January 12, 2022

Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) issued the following statement on SB 473 which passed out of the Senate Committee on Health:

“I am pleased my bill SB 473 unanimously passed out of the Senate Committee on Health. SB 473 will help address the high treatment costs for millions of Californians with diabetes by placing a cap on co-pays, deductibles, coinsurance, and other cost-sharing requirements.”

“People with diabetes spend 2.3 times more on health care expenses than a person without diabetes. The average list price of brand name insulin treatments nearly tripled between 2007 and 2018. The rising cost of insulin has put a financial strain on diabetics and their families. For those who are reliant on life-sustaining insulin medication but struggle to afford it, the choice is dire: life-saving medication or food on the table."

“This is unacceptable; no one should have to ration their insulin because of costs.”

“SB 473 will guarantee a level of certainty on the maximum cost sharing for diabetics. This will allow them to focus on managing their chronic condition rather than stress over the price of their medication.”
