Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) released the following statement today regarding a Los Angeles Times article that reported that thousands of California soldiers are being forced to repay enlistment bonuses years after going to war.
“It is outrageous that thousands of men and women who have honorably served are being forced to repay the enlistment bonuses they have received. They should not be punished for the mistakes and wrongdoing of others.
“It appears that this issue will require a federal fix and I am hopeful that Congress and the Obama Administration will do whatever is needed to honor the commitment made to the affected veterans. Should it be determined that action is also needed at the state level to help resolve this issue, I am committed to working with my colleagues on solutions.”
