Senate Sends Bipartisan Bill to Combat "Ransomware" to Governor Brown

The California State Senate today unanimously approved Senate Bill 1137 authored by Democratic Senator Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys) and co-authored by Republican Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) and others that would make “ransomware” the criminal equivalent of extortion.

Assembly Committee Blocks Bill to Address Fentanyl Drug Trafficking

The Assembly Appropriations Committee today refused to pass Senate Bill 1323 by Senators Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) and Bob Huff (R-San Dimas) that would enhance criminal penalties for illegal distributors of fentanyl, which has been linked to numerous deaths in California this year.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors is considering placing a measure on this November’s ballot that would ostensibly “strengthen” term limits. The board should reject this self-serving reform proposal crafted “by, for, and on behalf of Supervisor Shawn Nelson” because it is deceptive.

Statement on Plan to Extend Cap-and-Trade Taxes Without Legislative Approval

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) issued a plan yesterday to extend California’s controversial cap-and-trade tax program beyond its December 31, 2020 expiration date. This plan bypasses the Legislature in order to avoid the legally required two-thirds vote needed to continue cap-and-trade.
