SACRAMENTO – Senate Republican Leader Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) issued the following statement today on the passing of Ross Johnson, who served as Assembly Republican Leader, Senate Republican Leader, and chair of the California Fair Political Practices Commission. He was the first person to serve as a party leader in both the California State Senate and Assembly:
“Throughout his public service career, Ross Johnson was a passionate advocate for government accountability, and he championed measures that required the state to live within its means. He sponsored campaign finance reform measures so that the public had access to essential information about the forces behind state elections, and he did so with a combination of strength and clarity that defined his life. When he served as chair of the Fair Political Practices Commission, Ross admirably rose above politics and helped curb some of the worst abuses in California’s election laws.
“It was a privilege to have known Ross over the years, particularly when he represented Orange County in the Legislature years ago. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
